Secrets of Superstar Speakers: Speaking Skills

by Lilly Walters from McGraw Hill. The sequel to Secrets of Successful Speakers

Superstar speakers cannot be measured by how much they were enjoyed the day of the talk. A great movie entertains, and perhaps inspires. You laugh, maybe learn a few things. How much would you pay to rent a great movie or go the movies? With a great speaker you are also inspired, and laugh, but you will pay from $12,500 to $135,000 to bring one of these speakers to your company. Why the discrepancy in the worth?

Because the worth of a great speaker must be measured years after the speech, by the change those words created in the actions and attitudes of the those whose lives they have touched.

Because of those words ...

Want memorable results? Study the qualities being remembered.

What has changed in the lives of the listener because of the words? What moments of truth and long term applications happen in the hearts of those who encounter your words? What is really being remembered years after hearing a talk? If you knew that, you could create your speech around what is really being applied and remembered. Want memorable results? Study the qualities remembered!

This book will show you! Though survey research, analyzed results, and flavored with interviews, and anecdotes from:

ONE: Superstar speakers

TWO: Those whose lives they have touched

I have orchestrated the reflections and wisdom's of these two groups throughout this book. The first half, Who Are These Superstars? will show you the person they are today, and the person behind the persona, their wisdom's, turning points, and how they overcame incredible adversity and failures to become Superstar Speakers.

In the second half of the book, Creating A Superstar Speech, we show you the results of the words and why, how and exactly what it is about these superstar speeches that has created change in the lives listeners.

Through out the entire book you hear from both groups from the Superstars in their own words, like this:

Great speakers affect their audiences in astounding ways. I believe this is because the great speaker flashes a light of recognition into our minds. We suddenly see a truth that was already there. Like a hunting dog who points his tail back, and his nose forward, when he first sees a bird. He recognizes it. The instinct awakens.

The ideas great speakers present are like a mirror flashing a bright signal from a far-off power source. We are transfixed. We have been waiting for that very message. We already know it. We recognize it. We say to ourselves, "This is true. This is the confirmation I have been waiting for. I recognize it and welcome it like the electrifying sight of our nation's flag in a foreign land."

- Dottie Walters

Your talk must change actions and attitude. How better to decide on how you will create your talk than to study the results of those whose lives have been changed! Especially note vignettes of those who, because of the words of a superstar changed their journey, like this ...

As we were exiting a program by Mark Victor Hanson, my youngest boy, Devin, said, "Dad, does writing your goals really work?" I said, "Yes son, it does." But he wasn't interested in further discussion.

A couple of weeks later, after an Ed Forman television program on goal setting, Devin said, "Dad, will you help me write my goals?" I thought to myself "YES!". But before I could answer, Brandon, our first-born son said "Dad, will you help me write my goals, too?" And I realized though I had given up on Brandon, Brandon hadn't given up on Brandon...

"Panic stricken" would describe my wife's and my reaction when Brandon was diagnosed with Downs Syndrome, a birth defect in the cell chromosomes that for most, results in mental retardation. That prognosis was NOT OK with us! So we looked around. We became aware of an 8 year old Downs Syndrome girl in Australia who could read, write, and speak 3 languages, was a whiz at math and a virtuoso on the violin. We decided that if she could do it, Brandon could do it and we began doing everything you can imagine: stimulation programs, vitamin therapy, a continuous stream of volunteers, a constant devotion of daily effort, everything. I became a cub scout leader so Brandon could be in cub scouts. I became a boy scout leader so Brandon could be in boy scouts. And more importantly, I occasionally took him and his brother to hear professional speakers. But in spite of much ongoing inspiration from speakers like Rev. Robert Schuller, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Earl Nightingale, and Norman Vincent Peale, by the time Brandon was 10 years old, 1) he still couldn't read, 2) our momentum had slowed to a halt, and 3) I had given up.

But when he said, "Dad, will you help me write my goals, too?" it sent a shudder through me. After working on his goals, every couple of days, Brandon came to me and asked "Dad, can we READ my goals?" I began to think, "He really likes reading his goals, maybe it's time to try again to teach him to read " I'm proud to say that Brandon has completed reading his first "I Can Read" book!

And this outcome occurred because through thick and thin, we kept filling our minds and our hearts with stimulating ideas and information from some of the best professional speakers in the world today...

When you see a quote, like the one above, it will be directly from someone who heard the words of a Superstar and changed their life. As in Will's quote above, I will give a brief description of who they are. You will find that many time the Superstars I am profiling are talking about the experiences they have had in the audience of another great speaker.
